LA  LECHE LEAGUE BREASTFEEDING PEER SUPPORT COUNSELLOR PROGRAMME

Devised by la leche league international in 1988 the aim of the programme is to:

  • Increase the uptake of breastfeeding
  • Increase the continuation rates for breastfeeding
  • Raise the profile of breastfeeding locally
  • Improve mother’s access to support
  • Improve the quality of mother’s experience of breastfeeding
  • To encourage positive attitudes towards breastfeeding

Recently nine local mothers have completed the training to become peer supporters. They are called the Breastfeeding Support Rutland (BSR) and were recruited on the basis of having had a positive experience of breastfeeding  and a willingness to support others.

PEER COUNSELLOR TRAINING

All the peer supporters completed a 12 week training programme comprising 2 hour sessions Topics covered included understanding how breastfeeding works, breastfeeding management, positioning and attachment, communication skills ,overcoming barriers and the importance of confidentiality. The mothers were trained by local professionals (health  visitors, nursery nurses, and family outreach workers)who completed training to become an administrator. This  training consisted of ten modules over five full days. After the training the mothers had a graduation ceremony where they received a course certificate. All the mothers have completed a CRB check.
